Governor Announces More Board Appointments

Anchorage, AK – November 1, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — Governor Parnell announced his appointments to the Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve Advisory Council, the Alaska Natural Resources Conservation and Development Board, the Real Estate Commission, the Alaska Workforce Investment Board, the Alaska Public Broadcasting Commission, and the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority.Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve Advisory Council

Governor Parnell appointed Steve Lewis, and reappointed Evangeline Willard-Hoy and Ben Kirkpatrick to the Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve Advisory Council, which assists the Department of Natural Resources in the development and monitoring of a management plan for the Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve.

Lewis, of Juneau, is a wildlife biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), and is the coordinator of raptor management for the Alaska region. He has also worked for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game as a wildlife biologist and as a fish and wildlife technician. Lewis is appointed as a representative of the USFWS.

Willard-Hoy, of Haines, is the owner of Tlingit Ink Designs. She is also the marketing and shore operations manager for Jilkaat Kwaan Cultural Tours LLC and serves on the board of directors of the Haines Chamber of Commerce. Willard-Hoy is reappointed as a representative of Haines commercial and industrial interests.

Kirkpatrick, of Haines, is a natural resource consultant for AK Resources Inc. He also serves on the board of directors of the Takshanuk Watershed Council and the steering committee of Rivers Without Borders. Kirkpatrick also served formerly with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in numerous positions, including habitat biologist. He is reappointed to a seat representing a Haines conservation organization.

Alaska Natural Resources Conservation and Development Board

Governor Parnell appointed Charles Poindexter to the Alaska Natural Resources Conservation and Development Board. The board takes action to ensure that land is being used in a manner consistent with sound soil and water conservation practices and recommends action to provide for the effective and orderly development of agricultural, forest and grazing land.

Poindexter, of Anchor Point, is a retired natural resource teacher at Homer High School and the owner of Anchor Point Greenhouse. He is the past executive director of the Alaska Association of Conservation Districts, and has served on the board of directors of the Homer Soil and Water Conservation District. Poindexter is a former member of the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly, the Kenai Peninsula Borough School Board and the Anchor Point Chamber of Commerce. He is appointed as a representative of Southwest Alaska and the Kenai Peninsula.

Real Estate Commission

Governor Parnell appointed Charlene Flyum to the Real Estate Commission. The commission regulates and controls licensing, suspensions and revocations in the real estate industry, and manages the surety claim fund.

Flyum, of Homer, is a human resource generalist with Homer Electric Association. She formerly worked as an administrative assistant for the State of Alaska, as city clerk assistant for the City of Homer, and as an administrative assistant for the City of Unalaska. Flyum is appointed to a public seat.

Alaska Workforce Investment Board

Governor Parnell reappointed Christopher Gregg, Jim Laiti and Doug Ward to the Alaska Workforce Investment Board. The board promotes an efficient, effective and integrated system of employment education and training programs and services to enable Alaskans to gain the skills and opportunities necessary to earn a living wage and to meet the future business needs of the state.

Gregg, of Anchorage, is a business manager for the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT). He has been a member of IUPAT for 30 years, including work as a drywall finisher and business representative. Gregg is reappointed to a seat representing organized labor.

Laiti, of Fairbanks, has worked for United Association Local Union 375 JATC for nearly 40 years as a plumber, pipefitter, and welder from 1971–1992; as business agent from 1992–2003; and as business manager since 2003. He has served as a volunteer for the TAPS United Way Fundraiser since 1993 and is a trustee for the Alaska Pipetrades Pension since 1981. Laiti is reappointed to a seat representing organized labor.

Ward, of Ketchikan, is the director of shipyard development for Alaska Ship & Drydock Inc. He also serves on the board of directors for the Ketchikan Chamber of Commerce. Ward formerly worked with project design, permitting and construction with Dawson Construction, and he formerly owned Alternative Sewage Management & Clearwater Inc. He is reappointed to a private sector seat.

Alaska Public Broadcasting Commission

Governor Parnell reappointed Brenda Hewitt, Robert Kern and Lisa Vaught to the Alaska Public Broadcasting Commission. The commission encourages and supervises the development of the integrated state public broadcasting system and recommends grant funding for programs.

Hewitt, of Juneau, is the president of the United Way of Southeast Alaska. She served as vice president of marketing for Chena Hot Springs Resort and as president of Positive Impressions. Hewitt also worked as international promotions director for Ice Alaska and as the executive director of the UAF Alumni Association. She is reappointed to a public seat.

Kern, of Ketchikan, has been a broadcaster on Ketchikan morning radio for about 25 years. Kern has been in broadcast news, engineering and entertainment for nearly 50 years, and has worked for both public and commercial stations throughout the country. He is president of TLP Communications, a Ketchikan-based company, which publishes a weekly newspaper and owns and operates KFMJ radio. Kern serves on the Ketchikan Public Utilities Advisory Board, is a member of the Society of Wireless Pioneers, and was inducted into the Alaska Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in 2003. He is being reappointed to a public seat on the APBC.

Vaught, of Anchorage, is a self-employed tax professional and owner of The Vaught Spot Corporate Apartments. She is the former owner of Midnight Sun Cleaning and also worked as the office manager for former Lieutenant Governor Loren Leman. Vaught is reappointed to a public seat.

Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority

Governor Parnell appointed Robert Sheldon and reappointed Michael Felix to the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority (AIDEA). The authority is charged with promoting, developing and advancing the general prosperity and economic welfare of the people of Alaska; with relieving problems of unemployment; and with creating additional employment by facilitating the financing of business enterprises and by acquiring and managing facilities that enhance economic development. Board members of AIDEA also serve as the directors of the Alaska Energy Authority.

Sheldon, of Anchorage, is a third-generation Alaskan and a principal and founder of Arbor Capital Management, Inc. He has served as a director for the Reeve Corporation, a partner in FirstAnco, and general partner of the Power Fund Management, LLC. He also worked as a trust officer for First National Bank Alaska. Sheldon is a commissioner for the Commission on Judicial Conduct, has served on several trade efforts for the State of Alaska, and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a minor in finance from Colorado State University. He is appointed to a public seat.

Felix, of Anchorage, is the president of AT&T Alaska. He has worked in numerous management and board positions in the telecom and high-tech industries for over 35 years. Felix serves as chairman of the board of trustees for the University of Alaska Foundation, on the governing board of the Foraker Group, on the board of the Kenai River Sportfishing Association, and as an honorary commander for the 3rd Wing of the U.S. Air Force at Elmendorf Air Force Base. He earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of South Florida, and is reappointed to a public seat.
