Rural Communities to Receive Funding for VPSO Housing

-

Juneau, AK – September 6, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — Continuing toward his goal of ending Alaska’s epidemic of sexual assault and domestic violence within a decade, Governor Sean Parnell announced that three rural communities will receive funding to construct housing units for Village Public Safety Officers (VPSOs).

Governor Parnell requested $1 million in Alaska Housing Finance Corporation grants and low-interest loans to assist communities in building VPSO housing. Three VPSO-priority projects received funding, including one unit in Akiak, one unit in Igiugig, and three units in Sleetmute. There has been no VPSO housing available in Igiugig and Akiak.

“For Alaskans to be safe requires a meaningful law enforcement presence in rural Alaska,” Governor Parnell said. “Providing housing is a key to attracting and retaining VPSOs who will make a difference in our communities.”
