Public Housing Director Jim Gurke Retires After 30 Years

ANCHORAGE, – July 31, 2012 – (RealEstateRama) — Jim Gurke, Alaska Housing Finance Corporation (AHFC) Public Housing Director, is retiring at the end of this month after a 30-year career in Alaska’s public housing sector.

“Jim’s legacy as a dedicated public servant is only outdone by his reputation for being a friend and mentor to the countless Alaskans he has worked with over the years,” Dan Fauske, AHFC CEO and executive director said.

Gurke worked for the Alaska Department of Community and Regional Affairs in 1972 at the time the former Alaska State Housing Authority (ASHA) transferred its community planning authority to the department, including state mortgage insurance programs, rehabilitation loan programs, and rural and mobile home mortgage programs. When the Legislature consolidated all housing and energy programs under the AHFC banner, Gurke also made the transition. Since then, he has held the positions of Resource Development Analyst and Planner, Housing Services Manager, Resident Services Manager, Housing Programs and Policy Development Manager, and, since 2008, Public Housing Director.

As Public Housing Director he orchestrated the demolition and redevelopment of the Loussac Place in Anchorage, implemented new public housing software, and directed the creation of two new housing partnerships for hard-to-serve populations. He also moved public housing away from the preference-based system to one that more efficiently provides housing to those in need.

A lunch in honor of his retirement will be held at the newly completed Anchorage Family Investment Center, located at 440 East Benson Boulevard, on Monday, July 30, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Anchorage Family Investment Center will officially open in late August.

Alaska Housing Finance Corporation (AHFC) is a public corporation with a long history of providing Alaskans access to safe, quality and affordable housing through home financing programs, energy efficiency and weatherization programs, public housing and more. Since 1986, AHFC has contributed $1.9 billion to the State of Alaska’s General Fund.
