ANCHORAGE, AK – August 7, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — When Ryan Debonis from Eagle River received a check for $7,500 from Alaska Housing Finance Corporation (AHFC) for building to the highest efficiency standard available at time of new construction, 5 Star Plus, he became the 2,000th recipient of a 5 Star Plus rebate. Aside from receiving the rebate Dubonis will benefit from lower energy bills year-round due to more energy efficient construction.

“The new construction rebate is perhaps the least known of those available that Alaskans typically think about when retrofitting existing homes through AHFC’s Home Energy Rebate Program. The truth is, it’s much easier to incentivize people upfront – ‘build tight, ventilate right’ is sort of our motto around here. When homebuyers are weighing the advantages and costs of higher quality construction versus granite countertops, this incentive helps make the choice a little easier and in fact, can help pay for those extra amenities,” says Dan Fauske, executive director and CEO of AHFC who adds “It’s a win-win program for all involved.”

The Home Energy Rebate Program now offers new construction homes rebates of $7,000 for 5 Star Plus and $10,000 for 6 Star. Homeowners making energy efficiency improvements to existing homes are eligible for a rebate up to $10,000.

The Home Energy Rebate Program was initiated by the Alaska Legislature in 2008 and has been funded with $237.5 million. It has touched more than 34,000 Alaskan households, and coupled with the Weatherization Program that is designed to assist lower income Alaskans, saves an estimated 453,229 barrels of oil annually.

Alaska Housing Finance Corporation (AHFC) is a public corporation with a long history of providing Alaskans access to safe, quality and affordable housing through home financing programs, energy efficiency and weatherization programs, public housing and more. Since 1986, AHFC has contributed $1.9 billion to the State of Alaska’s General Fund.
